Rea nets first Moto2 points of 2014

gino rea assen saturday 2014Gino Rea took advantage of difficult conditions at Assen to claim his first points since last year’s Japanese Grand Prix. The AGT-Rea rider has endured a difficult start to the season but the heavy downpour before the start of today’s Moto2 race provided him with an opportunity to challenge for the points.

Speaking to after the race Rea said:

“Obviously there was a lot of drama on the way to the grid when it started to rain,” commented Rea. “We didn’t know any settings or what to put into the bike because we hadn’t done any wet laps so there was a bit of a gamble there. The start was pretty good and in the first three or four laps I just tried to pick up as many positions as I could because I was so far back on the grid and I was probably pushing a little bit too hard and made some mistakes.

I was confident that I could go past the group and catch onto the top five.  I was feeling good then but I was also struggling for grip and from the start of the race I was having rear moments. I was really strong on the brakes and turn in but once I was on the gas the rear was flicking me out of the seat everywhere.”

Rea had a major moment at half distance with a trip through the grass at turn 15 after almost highsiding his bike and after that he eased off in a bid to make sure to get to the flag and score points.

gino rea mugello saturday 2014 (2)“Going into turn 15 I tipped the bike in on its side like I normally did but on that lap I was on the edge and the rear stepped out and flicked me out of the seat. My initial thought was that it was going to be a big crash because it’s a fast fifth gear corner but I managed to hold it and then came back through the grass and when I rejoined I was tenth and said that I’d just get it to the finish and get some points.

“I’m very happy to bring points home for the team but I’m disappointed to have ran off because I thought that I could have progressed into the top five but bringing home points is great for the team and boosts everyone’s morale. It proves that we’re capable of running at the front when everything goes right but we’ve still got a lot of work to do in the dry. This weekend was really difficult but I want to show that we can run in the top ten in the dry but we’ve got some work to do for that.”
