Hayden: Still quite far behind

On his final weekend with Ducati Nicky Hayden could be excused for looking towards Monday’s test aboard the Honda Production Racer but the American is keen to end his five year tenure with the team with a solid performance in Valencia with Hayden saying, “I”m looking forward to Monday but need to stay focussed on this weekend.

The American performed well in FP1 but found less than two tenths in the afternoon having expected to have gained more time. Speaking afterwards he said:

We knew that Valencia would be one of the better tracks for Ducati but unfortunately we were still quite far behind,” said Hayden. “This  morning wasn’t too bad and we were competitive but we didn’t improve as much as the others. We struggled a lot with the wind and a couple of little issues but it’s the last race so we’ll keep marching on and see what we can do.”

The reason for this could be related to the track temperatures in Spain. While Misano in September was very hot today in Valencia saw the wind cool proceedings in the afternoon when Hayden used the new tyre:

“I used it this afternoon and I used it at Misano and really liked it there. I was able to do a very similar laptime to the soft. It worked OK but I haven’t made a decision yet. I probably like it better on the right because this morning the soft tyre went off very quickly on the right, definitely not race distance, so at the moment I’d want to mix the tyres. Nowadays there’s two choices so we don’t need to make the decision just yet and won’t know for sure until Sunday when we know the weather.”
