Rossi happy with Friday but thrilled with Seamless Shift Gearbox

valentino-rossi-silverstone-motogp-fp2-2013Valentino Rossi ended the opening day at Misano third fastest and just over one quarter of a second slower than the Honda’s of Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa.

It was a competitive start to his home Grand Prix, Tuvulia is less than 10km from Misano, and the Italian was pleased with his efforts:

“I am very happy about today and it was a good Friday,” said the Italian. “Already from this morning I was quite fast and in the afternoon was more positive because I stayed at the top and the laptimes are already at a good level in the low 1m34s. I was fast at the beginning on new tyres and at the end with the old tyres I’m always good with a good rhythm so it’s a good start for the weekend. I’m close to Jorge and our rhythm is very similar. The Honda’s are a bit faster but not very far [from our times] so we’ve got to continue like this.”

valentino-rossi-marc-marquez-laguna-seca-race-2013At the end of the session Rossi was able to follow Marquez on his last exit from the pits and the Italian enjoyed seeing Marquez close up on track and identifying the areas where the Spaniard is faster than the Yamaha:

“I enjoyed following Marc because his style is very fun and also because he was a bit faster than me but not a lot so we could stay together. It’s very difficult to compare our riding style because you have to ride our bikes completely differently, especially on the entry to the corner, but I have some points where I was not too bad and with the Seamless we lose less in acceleration so it was fun.”

valentino-rossi-laguna-seca-fp3-2013One area where Yamaha have improved is acceleration due to the deployment of their Seamless Shift Gearbox for the first time at a Grand Prix and afterwards Rossi enthused about the new part which the team expect to play a key part in making them more competitive in race conditions:

“The gearbox is fantastic to use and for the rider it is a great help,” added Rossi. “I don’t think it’s a big improvement for performance on one lap but the bike is more stable and less demanding and you can concentrate more on the line and riding the bike on the limit. We improved our acceleration and it will help in a race distance because our bike is more easy to ride and in acceleration you can put the bike more precisely for the next corner so for a race distance it will be a big help. The biggest difference is the settings for the electronics because the bike wheelies less now but mechanically we use the same settings.”
