Leading MotoGP riders praise Fenati

Following his stunning maiden victory Romano Fenati has caught the attention of MotoGP’s leading lights.

The Italian Federation rider made his Grand Prix debut at the season opener inQatarand challenged Moto3 championship favourite, Maverick Vinales, for the victory. His performance marked him as a future star in the introductionary class. But on a damp track with slick tyres the star was born with a dominant victory.

Fenati moved to the front in the early stages of the 23 lap race before having a thrilling battle with fellow rookie Alex Rins. The reigning Spanish 125cc champion however crashed at half distance and handed Fenati a commanding lead.

With the pressure removed it is very easy for a rider to make a mistake, as shown by Marco Simonchelli crashing in similar conditions last year. Fenati however kept a consistent pace to the flag and the victory.

Triple world champion Jorge Lorenzo was particularly impressed by the maturity that Fenati showed to do this.

“I a difficult race he could maintain the concentration and keep calm,” commented Lorenzo. “It was very easy to crash but he kept calm and could keep a good pace. It was very impressive.”

Fenati’s eventual victory margin was 36s, the largest victory margin since Fausto Gresini’s victory atLe Mansin 1987, amazed the paddock with Casey Stoner keen to speak about it following his MotoGP victory.

“Im not sure what the record is for 125s but that a very big victory,” said Stoner. He was past the first sector before they passed the finish line. I’m really impressed.”

The Australian admitted to not knowing much about Fenati until the season started but after his debut podium inQatarthe reigning MotoGP world champion quickly took note of the youngster.

“I hadn’t heard much about him until I saw him giving Vinales a lot of trouble in the first race,” said Stoner. “He came in really quiet and is doing a fantastic job at the moment. He’s a real talent.”

Following his victory Fenati leads the Moto3 championship standings by ten points from Vinales.
