Hewitt takes advantage of Roddick injury to move into round three

The evening session in Melbourne Park saw plenty of fireworks with the biggest headline being reserved for Lleyton Hewitt. The Australian has had a turbulent time in recent years but the former world number was at his combative best in his second round match against Andy Roddick.

The American took the opening set 6-3 but from that point onwards the match turned with Hewitt clawing his way back into the match by taking the second set by the same scoreline after converting the sole break point of the set. Hewitt then went on to claim the third set after breaking Roddick’s serve twice. With Roddick retiring with a hamstring injury at the beginning of the fourth set Hewitt progressed to a third round match with Milos Raonic.

The Australian may not be the player he once was but the fierce determination and never say die attitude is still present and the 23rd seeded Raonic can take nothing for granted heading into the match.

It wasn’t all good news forAustraliahowever with Jelena Dokic defeated in straight sets by Marion Bartolli.

Earlier Andy Murray also progressed following a comfortable straight sets victory against Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin.Murray’s reward will be a third round match against another Frenchman, Michael Llodra.
