Checa continues to lead the way ahead of qualifying

Ducati may not have a factory entry in World Superbikes this year but that has not stopped the Italian manufacturer from dominating a Philip Island.

In final practice at the Australian venue Carlos Checa and Sylvain Guintoli topped the timesheets ahead of Max Biaggi, the impressive Leon Haslam and Jakub Smrz, teammate of Guintoli.

Checa has been in ominous form throughout the week and has topped ever session since the week’s opening test. The Spaniard, third in last year’s title chase, has support from the Ducati factory but knows that he will not have the opportunity to dominate the season like Ducati riders of yore. As a result he knows that it is crucial to “make hay when the sun shines” and win races this weekend.

Jonathon Rea was sixth fastest ahead of Troy Corser, Eugene Laverty, Tom Sykes with Nori Haga rounding out the top ten before final qualifying.
